What 급 means
The compound chooses the sense.
In 고급 and 중급, it is 級, grade; in 월급 and 지급, 給, pay or supply; in 급하다 and 긴급, 急, urgent or fast. The bare block cannot pick the gloss.
급 is a spelling block, not a picture word. Hangeul was created in 1443 and publicly explained in 1446 to write Korean clearly. As of 2026, isolated 급 has no separate regional meaning; the surrounding word picks the reading.
