What 금 means
Its meaning depends on the whole Korean word. 금 can mean gold or money, begin 금요일 (“Friday”) and 금지 (“prohibition”), or mean a crack in 금이 가다 (“to crack”). The complete word tells you which sense you are reading.
Hangul was created to make reading and writing easier in 1443. Hunminjeongeum, the book that introduced the script, was published in 1446. In Korean vocabulary, 금 corresponds to different Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), including 金 in gold-related words and 禁 in prohibition words. These are word-level connections, not visual origins of the Hangul block.

Questions people ask
1Why does 금 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
