Why do Hangul letters form blocks?
Hangul packs its alphabetic letters into one block for each syllable. The Sejong Annals, a record of King Sejong’s reign, first record its creation in 1443; an explanatory book called 훈민정음 appeared in 1446. Hangul was designed to write Korean speech directly with letters meant to be easy to learn and use.
During the Joseon period, Hangul coexisted with Hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean writing, and Idu, a way to write Korean using those characters. Women used Hangul for correspondence, literature, and calligraphy. As of 2026, Korean writing uses Hangul almost exclusively. Fonts can arrange its letters differently inside a block, changing spacing or legibility without changing the syllable.
What does 깬 mean when someone sends it alone?
Alone, 깬 does not show which sense the sender intends. It may be a fragment of a longer sentence or rely on shared chat context; check the Korean phrase around it before settling on a translation.
