What 껍 means
It is a syllable, not a complete word.
껍데기 means “shell” or “outer covering”; 껍 is its first syllable.
Why does 껍 look like one block?
Hangul is Korea’s alphabet; its letters combine into square syllable blocks.
Hangul was devised under King Sejong in 1443; a book explained it in 1446. It aimed to make Korean literacy easier. Before it, Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol adapted Chinese characters for Korean writing. Hangul later appeared in religious, practical, and everyday texts. In separate-letter form, 껍 uses ᄁ as its initial consonant, ᅥ as its vowel, and ᆸ as its final consonant; fonts vary their size and placement.
