Hangul syllable ggi

1149/11172

끼 is a Korean syllable block that usually has no complete word meaning by itself. It appears in 끼다, which can mean being stuck, fastened, mixed in, or joining in, and 끼니, a word for a meal; ggi and kki are Latin search spellings for this syllable. On the standard Korean keyboard, ShiftR then L forms it.

What 끼 means

Usually, 끼 is a syllable fragment, not a full word. The Latin search spellings “ggi” and “kki” point to this Hangul syllable; they do not supply its meaning. The full Korean word decides the sense: 끼다 can mean to be stuck or fastened, to mix in, or to join in; 끼니 means a meal or mealtime.

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was devised under King Sejong and completed in 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript, a book explaining the new letters, describes the script. It offered Korean speakers a more accessible way to write their language than the Chinese-character system then used.

Korea made Hangul its official national writing system in 1894, while official documents had relied mainly on Chinese characters. Under Japanese rule beginning in 1910, Korean scholars continued research, teaching, and literature around Hangul, which also came to express national identity. After liberation in 1945, work on spelling rules and language policy resumed.

How do I type 끼 on a Korean keyboard?

Press ShiftR, then L, with Korean input on. On the standard two-set (Dubeolsik) Korean keyboard, ShiftR enters ㄲ and L enters ㅣ. The Korean input method—the software that converts key presses into Hangul—combines them into 끼; there is no dedicated key for the finished block.

A jamo is a Korean letter component used to build a syllable. Unicode can store a Hangul syllable as one composed block or as a sequence of its positional jamo; the visible result can depend on the text and font.

As a Korean syllable, 끼 is neutral; politeness and tone come from the complete word and sentence around it.

A lone 끼 does not mean “meal” or “join”; those readings belong to complete words.

Questions people ask

1

Why do I see ㄲㅣ instead of 끼?

Those are two separate jamo characters, ㄲ and ㅣ, rather than one composed syllable block. Korean input software normally combines the letters while you type, but separately entered jamo can remain separate.
