What 끽 means
Its meaning depends on the Korean word around it. 끽소리도 못 하다 rebukes speaking up; 끽해야 means “at most.”
The first record of Hangul dates to 1443; the 1446 book 훈민정음 explains why the script was made. 끽 joins ㄲ, ㅣ, and ㄱ in one block. The Chinese character 喫, used in Korean writing, has recorded readings 켝 (1448) and 긱 (1527), plus 끽 today.
끽소리 is terse and admonishing.

1Why does 끽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
