Hangul syllable ggid

1156/11172

낃 is a Korean Hangul syllable block, not a word with a meaning on its own; its sound belongs to the Korean word around it. In 흘낏, it helps spell an adverb for a quick, slightly sharp glance. A Korean two-set keyboard forms it from ㄲ, ㅣ, and ㄷ.

What 낃 means

Its sound belongs to a word; it has no standalone meaning here.

낃 is a Hangul syllable block built from three letter pieces, called jamo: ㄲ, ㅣ, and ㄷ. In 흘낏, it is part of a Korean adverb for a quick, often sideways glance; the word carries a sharper force than 흘깃.

The first record of Hangul is dated to 1443, and an explanatory book called Hunminjeongeum appeared in 1446. Hangul offered a practical way to write Korean speech when learning to read Chinese characters was a barrier. Earlier Korean writers adapted Chinese characters to write Korean through systems called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Hangul gained national recognition in 1894, lost status under Japanese rule, and became a foundation of Korean cultural identity after 1945. A 2026 study relates its design to Buddhist writing practices, South Asian scripts, the Phags-pa script, and Chinese sound analysis; it does not propose one simple parent script.

How do I type 낃?

On the Korean two-set layout, choose Korean input and press ShiftR, L, then E.

A Korean input method editor (IME) joins those keystrokes as ㄲ, ㅣ, and ㄷ to form 낃. With English input active, the same keys type Latin letters.

Why can 낃 look different?

The font can draw the syllable block with different proportions.

Unicode can store 낃 as one precomposed character or as conjoining Hangul letters. A shaping engine and font assemble the parts into a block, so its proportions can vary. The pieces should stay together as one syllable when text wraps.

Why does 낃 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
