hangul syllable ggyab

Hangul syllable Ggyab

662/11172

꺕 is one Korean syllable block, not a complete message; its meaning comes from the Korean word around it. A Korean two-set keyboard builds it from three letter units called jamo. The same syllable can also be stored as a sequence of those three letters.

What 꺕 means

It is a Korean syllable block, not a complete word or idea. 꺕 combines the initial consonant ᄁ, vowel ᅣ, and final consonant ᆸ. Inside a Korean word it contributes one syllable; alone, it does not identify a specific word. On a two-set Dubeolsik Korean keyboard, ShiftR, I, Q assembles it.

How do I type 꺕?

Use a Korean keyboard set to Dubeolsik. With Korean input active, press ShiftR, I, Q for ㄲ, ㅑ, ㅂ; the input software composes 꺕.

The sequence 꺕 is another Unicode form of the same syllable. Text software can normalize both forms to one standard form, but a raw character-by-character comparison can still tell them apart.

Why are Hangul letters grouped in blocks?

Hangul groups Korean letters into square syllable blocks. A 1443 entry in the Sejong Sillok, King Sejong's court annals, records the script's creation. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum book explains the new writing system's purpose and design. Earlier, Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean; they were different writing methods.

Hangul's designers also used a Chinese scheme that classified initial consonants by where and how they are made. The script's original name was Hunminjeongeum; later names included eonmun and gukmun. South Korean usage calls it Hangeul, while North Korean usage calls it Chosŏn'gŭl.

A 2009 study compares Hangul's design with the earlier Phags-pa writing system. That comparison alone does not establish descent.

Neutral and technical: it belongs in Korean words and in keyboard or font testing.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 꺕 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
