hangul syllable ggyi

Hangul syllable ggyi

1121/11172

끠 spells one Hangul syllable, ㄲ ㅢ. In standard Korean, ㅢ after an initial consonant sounds like ㅣ, so 끠 can sound like 끼 despite the different spelling; context tells you how it works in a word or name. On Korean 2-set input, ShiftR, M, then L composes it.

What 끠 means

It writes ㄲ ㅢ as one Hangul syllable.

ㄲ is the firmly articulated, tense version of ㄱ; ㅢ combines ㅡ and ㅣ. In standard Korean, ㅢ after an initial consonant is pronounced like ㅣ, the “ee” in “see,” so 끠 can sound like 끼 even though the spelling differs.

Hangul was devised in 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript explained the new script and how it represented Korean. 끠 follows that system’s design: letters combine into syllable blocks.

How do I type 끠?

Use Korean 2-set input: ShiftR, then M, then L.

In Dubeolsik, ShiftR gives ㄲ, M gives ㅡ, and L gives ㅣ. A Korean IME joins the two vowels as ㅢ and forms the block; switch to Korean input first.

If the app leaves the jamo separate, it may be showing a decomposed form rather than losing the key sequence.

Why can 끠 look broken?

A font or app may show the component jamo separately.

Unicode can represent this syllable as a precomposed block or as the conjoining-jamo sequence 끠. Some font and app combinations do not shape that sequence into one block, so separate-looking parts can still encode the same syllable.

뀌 is a different syllable: its vowel is ㅟ, while 끠 has ㅢ. 끼 is closer in sound under the Korean pronunciation rule, but its spelling uses ㅣ.

A neutral syllable spelling; read it through the Korean word or name it belongs to.

Alone, it does not show whether it belongs to a word or a name.

Questions people ask

1

Why did I see 끄ㅣ instead of 끠?

A 2026 Korean community-wiki entry about streamer 끠끼 reports that one YouTube subtitle font rendered 끠 as 끄ㅣ and AfreecaTV temporarily rejected it in a nickname. Those are platform-specific display or input problems, not alternate spellings.
