Hangul Syllable Goeng

330/11172

On a Korean two-set keyboard, type ㄱ ㅚ ㅇ; the IME builds 굉 for you. In Korean text, it appears inside words such as 굉장히 (“very”) and 굉음 (“a roaring sound”), not as a standalone reaction. The same spelling can represent different Hanja roots, so its surrounding word decides the meaning.

What 굉 means

Use a Korean IME: press r, h, l, then d.

On two-set Dubeolsik, r maps to ㄱ, h then l combine as ㅚ, and d supplies final ㅇ. If you enter goeng while the keyboard is in English mode, you get Latin letters instead. Korean input mode is doing the composition; it is not translating the spelling.

Unicode can also represent the same syllable as decomposed jamo. A pasted version may therefore expose separate pieces in some applications even though the intended Korean reading is unchanged.

What does 굉 mean in Korean words?

The surrounding word, not 굉 alone, supplies the meaning.

In 굉장히, the dictionary meaning is “very” or “greatly.” In 굉음, the same Hangul block belongs to a noun meaning a roaring or booming sound. Treat 굉 as a sound-bearing piece of a word, not as a portable synonym for “great.”

Where did the Hangul block 굉 come from?

It comes from Hangul's syllable-block system, not one invented sign.

Hangul's documented creation is dated to 1443, and Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446 to explain its purpose and principles. The goal was an accessible way to write Korean when Chinese characters did not match Korean speech. Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal are historically connected workarounds that also used Chinese characters to represent Korean.

The earliest evidence I can support here is an ancestor, not the modern block: a 1448 record gives a Middle Korean reading 회ᇰ for Hanja 轟. As of 2026, no separate first manuscript for modern 굉 is established in the reviewed sources, so no single inventor or fixed ancient meaning should be claimed.

Neutral in Korean spelling; alone in a message, it looks unfinished rather than expressive.

Do not translate 굉 alone as “great”; the surrounding word chooses the meaning.
