What 곳 means

A place or spot. It names physical or abstract locations; after a number, 한 곳 means “one place.” 이곳 is “this place,” 그곳 “that place,” and 저곳 “a place over there.”

Hangul, Korea’s writing system, was created in 1443; the 1446 guide 훈민정음 explains its design. The 1447 text 용비어천가 records the word as 곧. A 2004 study records Middle Korean -곳/옷, an older particle (grammar marker) for pointing or emphasis; Middle Korean is an earlier Korean stage.

Why does 곳 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
