Hangul syllable 괆

263/11172

The meaning of 괆 depends on its Korean word: on its own, it is one Hangul syllable block, not a full definition. Its final cluster ㄻ can sound different depending on what follows. Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was developed in King Sejong’s Joseon dynasty to write Korean speech; a royal record announced it in 1443, and a 1446 guide explained the script.

What 괆 means

The Korean word around 괆 supplies its meaning.

This Hangul block is a spelling unit built from jamo—the individual letters of the Korean alphabet. By itself, it gives no reliable word definition; the written word and surrounding sounds tell you how to read it.

King Sejong’s Joseon court developed Hangul as a sound-based way to write Korean. Chinese characters were used to write Korean before then, but they did not map neatly onto Korean speech. The script’s original name was 훈민정음, usually translated as “proper sounds for instructing the people”; the same name labels a guide explaining how the letters combine into syllable blocks.

Why do the parts of 괆 appear separately?

It is a decomposed spelling of the same syllable.

Unicode text can store Hangul as one syllable block or as separate jamo. NFC normalization, a standard text operation, recombines 괆 as 괆.

At a word ending, ㄻ is pronounced as ㅁ. When a Korean word continues with an ending that starts with a vowel, ㄹ stays at the end and ㅁ begins the next syllable, so the written cluster alone cannot settle the spoken form.

Neutral text: alone, 괆 reads as a Korean spelling fragment, not an emotional signal.

Do not treat the bare syllable as a full word; its surrounding Korean spelling determines its meaning.

Why is 괆 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
