What 궚 means
It writes one Korean syllable.
The 궚 jamo sequence is ᄀ ᅯ ᆹ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant cluster. Hangul fonts arrange these parts as one block.
Hangul is recorded by 1443; its explanatory manuscript 훈민정음 was completed in 1446 to make Korean writing more accessible without Chinese characters. Idu and hyangchal were older ways to write Korean with Chinese characters, not ancestors of 궚. A 2009 study proposed Phags-pa influence on Hangul vowels; this remains a hypothesis. Hangul gained official national status in 1894, was suppressed during Japanese colonial rule, and became central to Korean identity.
