What 걮 means

걮 is one Hangul syllable block: ㄱ ㅒ ㅍ.

“Gyaep” is a sound label, not an English definition. Hangul writes Korean by grouping letters into syllable blocks; this one can represent a syllable within a word, so the surrounding Korean text supplies its meaning.

The Hangul writing system was developed under King Sejong to make Korean easier to write and learn; before it, Korean was written by adapting Chinese characters. A court chronicle records the new letters in December 1443, and the book Hunminjeongeum, published in 1446, explained their design and how letters form syllables.

how do i type 걮?

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, type R, ShiftO, then V.

The 2-set QWERTY layout assigns separate keys to Korean consonants and vowels: these presses enter ㄱ, ㅒ, ㅍ. With Korean input enabled, the input method joins them into one syllable block; the block can redraw while you type.

If 걮 appears as an empty box, the font or app may not support its Hangul glyph. The box is a missing-character placeholder; try a font that supports Korean Hangul.

How did Hangul move into daily writing?

Hangul moved from teaching materials into ordinary writing. Early Hangul books included Buddhist scriptures and later books of Confucian teaching. By the late 16th century, printed guides also covered food, illness, laws, and martial arts.

Letters exchanged by royal family members, complaints written by noblewomen, and household labels show Hangul in daily use across social ranks, even while official records were mostly written in Chinese characters. It became Korea’s official national writing system in 1894, lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910, and remained in use despite suppression; policies to standardize Hangul followed liberation in 1945.

One proposed connection is Phags-pa, a square script adapted from Tibetan writing for the Mongol Yuan empire and promulgated in 1269. Some scholars argue it influenced Hangul’s design; the proposal concerns the alphabet as a whole, not a special origin for 걮.
