hangul syllable gyam

Hangul syllable Gyam

73/11172

Use Korean input to enter ㄱ, ㅑ, and ㅁ in sequence; the input method joins them into 걈, one Hangul syllable block. In a Korean word, its role comes from the surrounding text; a message with only 걈 leaves that word unclear.

What 걈 means

Use Korean input and enter ㄱ, then ㅑ, then ㅁ.

On a standard Korean keyboard, those keys provide the starting consonant, vowel, and ending consonant; the input method joins them into 걈.

Unicode can also store the same Hangul syllable as a precomposed block or as its canonically equivalent sequence of joining letters, called jamo. Text processing may normalize between these forms; some input or display paths can show the letters separately.

What does 걈 mean on its own?

걈 is one Hangul syllable block; its role depends on the word.

Read it as one syllable inside a Korean word. If someone sends only 걈, ask which word they meant; the word that gives it context is missing.

Hangul was developed under King Sejong in 1443. The Hunminjeongeum manuscript, published in 1446, announced and explained the alphabet. Before Hangul, Korean was written with Chinese characters and adaptations such as Idu, a system that used Chinese characters to represent Korean; those systems did not fit Korean well. 걈 is a regular syllable built from Hangul letters, not a separately invented ancient sign. The complete modern syllable set, called Johab, was standardized for computers in 1992; that dates the computer repertoire, not this syllable's origin.

Questions people ask

2

Is 걈 an emoji or a Korean character?

A Korean text character: one Hangul syllable block. Its visual style comes from the font, not emoji artwork.

Why does 걈 look different in different fonts?

The character stays the same while fonts draw Hangul parts with different shapes and spacing. Some systems also store a canonically equivalent jamo sequence; that is another text representation, not a different syllable.
