What 걉 means
It is one Korean syllable, built from three jamo. Before Hangul, Korean writing used Chinese characters, sometimes adapted to Korean through systems called hyangchal, gugyeol, and idu. King Sejong created Hangul in 1443 and promulgated it in 1446 so people unfamiliar with Chinese characters could read and write Korean. It later appeared in letters, Buddhist books, novels, and official documents.
