hangul syllable gyeog

Hangul Syllable Gyeog

격 has no single English meaning alone: Korean uses this gyeok syllable inside words, grammar terms, and idioms. In 가격 it helps mean “price,” in 자격 “status” or “qualification,” and in -는 격 it can mean “as if.” Treat it as Korean text, not an emoji.

What 격 means

It depends on the word and the Hanja behind it.

Read the surrounding Korean word first. In 가격, with the character 格, it belongs to a word for the value of something for sale; in 자격 it belongs to a word for a person's status or the conditions needed for a role. Same visible syllable, different translations.

격 also names a grammatical case, the relationship a noun has to the verb, and a dependent noun after -은 or -는 meaning “as if” or “the situation of.” A lone 격 gives a sound and spelling, not a complete definition.

Why does 격 have different meanings?

One Hangul block can write several Hanja readings.

Several distinct Hanja are read 격 in Korean, including 格, 激, 擊, and 隔. The Hangul block alone does not tell you which one a compound uses; the rest of the word does. The same Hanja can have different readings in Chinese or Japanese, so 격 is not a cross-language pictogram.

The history is the writing system's, not a single invention of this block. Hangul's creation is placed in 1443 and the completion of the explanatory Hunminjeongeum book in 1446; its purpose was to let Koreans write their language more easily than with Chinese characters. As of 2026-09-07, the sources checked do not establish the earliest surviving occurrence of 격 as a word or a dated shift for the standalone block.

Verdict: read the whole Korean word

Sent alone, ask for the surrounding word or sentence before translating it; 격 is too underspecified to decode safely.

Switch to Korean 2-set input and enter ㄱ + ㅕ + ㄱ. On QWERTY, that is r-u-r; the input method assembles the initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant into 격. Typing the romanization gyeog in English mode does not transliterate it. Copy it from the palette above if you only need it once.

Neutral as a Korean text syllable; the tone comes from its compound, grammar, or idiom.

Do not translate 격 by itself; identify the whole word or sentence first.
