hangul syllable gyigs

Hangul syllable Gyigs

536/11172

긗 is one Hangul syllable block; “Gyigs” is Unicode’s generated name from its component letters, not a Korean translation. Hangul emerged in 1443 and was documented in the 1446 text Hunminjeongeum, a guide meant to make Korean easier to write than methods that adapted Chinese characters for Korean, such as Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal. It coexisted with Chinese-character writing before becoming Korea’s main script.

What 긗 means

Unicode builds “Gyigs” from the short names of its Hangul letters. Hangul groups individual letters (jamo) into a block: initial consonant, vowel, then a final consonant if present. Here the parts are ᄀ, ᅴ and ᆪ, whose Unicode short names are G, YI and GS. The encoded block can also be understood as base syllable 긔 plus final cluster ᆪ ; “Gyigs” labels these parts, not a Korean translation.
