What 햋 means
It is a Hangul syllable block, not an established standalone word. 햋 combines ㅎ ㅐ final ㅊ. The Unicode label “haec” names that letter sequence; it is not a Korean definition. As of 2026-09-13, 햋 has no established standalone lexical or chat meaning.
Hangul’s history explains the block design, not a separate origin for 햋. A record from 1443 announces the new letters; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the writing system, explains how an initial consonant, vowel and final consonant form a syllable. The system was designed to represent Korean speech directly, at a time when formal writing relied heavily on Chinese characters.
How did Hangul use change?
For centuries, Hangul circulated in letters, Buddhist publications and novels, including among commoners and women, while elite literary writing remained tied to Chinese characters. By the end of the 19th century, Hangul was promoted as a national script; mixed Hangul–Hanja (using Chinese characters alongside Hangul) and Hangul-only writing served different genres.
In South Korean professional publications, mixed Hangul–Hanja writing remained conventional through the 1980s; Hangul-only writing spread through the 1990s. Phags-pa, another writing system, is compared with Hangul because both arrange letters in syllable-shaped blocks. That structural comparison does not establish that Hangul or 햋 was copied from it.
How do you type 햋?
Use a Korean input method and enter ㅎ, then ㅐ, then ㅊ. On the standard Dubeolsik keyboard layout, those keys are G, O and C, so G-O-C builds 햋 when Korean input is active. The order matters because the input method joins the letters as initial, vowel, then final.
Hangul typefaces can vary the spacing and proportions of letters inside the square syllable block, so 햋 may look wider or tighter without changing its letter sequence. If software stores the jamo separately, Unicode NFC (Normalization Form C) can combine the modern sequence into one Hangul syllable character.
Neutral and technical; use it when identifying this exact Korean spelling unit.

1Why does 햋 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
