What 허 means
A lone 허 has no single English equivalent. Its meaning comes from the whole word: 허가 means “permission”; 허위, “falsehood.” 허허 is Korean laughter.
Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean easier for more people to write; its purpose and design were explained in 1446. Earlier systems—Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal—adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Hangul is the everyday writing system for Korean.
