What 험 means
험 has no single translation by itself. Read it inside the full Korean word. The same Hangul syllable can write different Hanja: 위험 uses 險 for danger, while 경험 and 시험 use 驗 for experience and testing. 험담 uses 險 in a word for speaking spitefully about someone.
Treat its history as a writing-system story, not a pictogram story. Before Hangul, Korean writing used Chinese ideographs and hybrid systems such as idu and hyangch'al. Hangul's creation culminated in 1443 and its public promulgation in 1446; its purpose was to fit Korean speech and make writing easier to learn. The structural parts of 험 are ㅎ + ㅓ + ㅁ, explained under Related characters.
How do I type 험?
Use a Korean IME: ㅎ + ㅓ + ㅁ. On the standard South Korean two-set layout, press g, j, a; the IME composes the three jamo into 험. Typing heom uses the romanization, not the normal Korean key sequence.
If software exposes separate jamo pieces, that is a representation difference, not automatically a different syllable. Unicode defines Hangul syllables as composites of a leading consonant, vowel, and optional final consonant, with normalization linking precomposed and decomposed forms.
In a Korean word, 험 is ordinary text; alone, it feels incomplete rather than like an emoji reaction.
Do not translate 험 alone as “danger”; that is only one Hanja reading.

1Why do I sometimes see 험 as separate jamo?
It can be a different normalization form. Unicode may store the block as precomposed 험 or as a linked jamo sequence; raw code-point tools can expose the pieces even when the text reads the same.
