What 혿 means
It is an older spelling associated with modern 홑.
A 1995 note from the National Institute of Korean Language says 홑 appeared as 홋 or 혿 in medieval and early-modern Korean. It cites 혿옷 in an old text and distinguishes these spellings from 홀, a different word meaning “alone.”
Before Hangul, writers adapted Chinese characters to record Korean words and grammar through systems such as idu, gugyeol, and hyangchal. Sejong’s court created Hangul in 1443; the book Hunminjeongeum, which explained its design, was published in 1446. Hangul became the official national writing system in 1894.
Someone sent me 혿 — what should I read?
As of 2026, 혿 has no settled chat reaction meaning.
A message containing only 혿 does not show why the sender chose it; ask for the surrounding text.
How is 혿 built?
It is a syllable block made from a starting consonant, a vowel, and an ending consonant.
A Korean input method assembles those parts as you type. Some text tools expose them as separate jamo; Unicode NFC normalization can recombine an eligible sequence into the composed syllable.
Historical spelling; use 홑 for the modern word meaning “single” or “not layered.”
Do not swap 혿 for 홑 or 홀: the word and meaning change.

Questions people ask
2Why does 혿 appear in explanations of 홑몸?
It marks a historical pronunciation step. In 홑몸, the final consonant of 홑 has a clipped t-like sound, then changes to an n sound before ㅁ. Older spelling discussions write that intermediate step as 혿; the modern spelling remains 홑몸.
Can I use 혿 in ordinary Korean?
Usually not. Write 홑 in modern Korean for “single” or “not layered”; reserve 혿 for a historical quotation or discussion of older spelling.
