What 혼 means
It can mean “soul” or signal a solo activity. 혼 is a Hangul syllable: as the Korean reading of the Chinese character 魂, it means “soul” or “spirit.” In 혼밥, 혼 signals eating alone; by itself, it can be the noun “soul.”
A 2016 Yonhap report records 혼밥, 혼술, and 혼놀 as labels for solo activities.
How far back does 혼 go?
The reading is recorded by 1448. Hangul was devised in 1443 to make Korean easier to write than by adapting Chinese characters. Its guide, Hunminjeongeum, appeared in 1446. The pronunciation guide Dongguk Jeongun records 혼 in 1448; the character primer Hunmong Jahoe records it again in 1527.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
