Hangul syllable 훆

10951/11172

Type ㅎ, then ㅜ, then ㄲ in Korean input to produce 훆. These Hangul letters, called jamo, form one syllable block; on the standard Dubeolsik Korean keyboard, the keys are g, n, then ShiftR. Its role in Korean spelling comes from the word around it. Software may store the same syllable as one precomposed character or as separate jamo.

What 훆 means

Use Korean input: ㅎ, then ㅜ, then ㄲ.

On the standard Dubeolsik Korean keyboard layout, enter g, n, then ShiftR; the Korean input method composes the letters into 훆. This key mapping was checked 2026-09-14. Since ㅜ is a horizontal vowel, ㅎ sits above it and final ㄲ below. Other Korean layouts may use different keys.

Does 훆 mean anything on its own?

Alone, it is a syllable without a word around it.

Each Hangul block writes one syllable, and the surrounding Korean spelling shows what that syllable contributes to a word or name. If someone sends only 훆, there is not enough surrounding text to identify a word; ask what text they meant.

Why is 훆 built as a block?

Hangul arranges letters into a block for each syllable.

The earliest recorded notice of the script appears in the Sejong Sillok in 1443. Hunminjeongeum, a 1446 guide to the new Korean letters, explained why the script was created and how initial consonants, vowels, and final consonants form syllable blocks. It was designed to make Korean easier to write in a system suited to Korean speech, since Chinese characters did not fit that speech neatly.

훆 has no separate origin story: its letters follow those Hangul block rules. Hangeul became a widely used name for the script in 1928.

Why does 훆 appear as separate jamo?

It may be shown as decomposed Hangul: the same syllable can be represented by its initial, vowel, and final jamo instead of one precomposed character. Korean input can compose those pieces into a block.
