Hangul Syllable Hwad

10844/11172

홛 is one Korean syllable block, built from the Hangul letters ㅎ ㅘ final ㄷ. By itself it does not tell you a full word or message, so read it in the Korean text around it. Its Unicode name, “Hwad,” labels the written parts; spoken alone, it ends like “hwaht,” with the t clipped short.

What 홛 means

홛 is one Korean syllable; the word around it supplies the sense. If someone sends it alone, the block does not reveal their intended message; look for the full word or source.

Hangul's component letters, called jamo, are ㅎ ㅘ final ㄷ. Spoken alone, 홛 sounds roughly like “hwaht,” with a clipped final t; ㄷ at the end of a Korean syllable sounds closer to an unreleased t than the d in English “day.”

Hangul arranges Korean letters into syllable blocks

Hangul was devised under King Sejong in 1443 and explained in the 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the script's purpose and design. Earlier Korean writing practices—Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal—adapted Chinese characters to write Korean words and grammar; they are part of the script's history, not component letters in 홛.

A transcription of the 1580 sijo 훈민가, a Korean lyric poem, includes 홛 in the longer spelling ᄇᆡ홛ᄂᆞ니. There, 홛 is one part of a written word.

How do I type 홛?

On a standard Korean two-set keyboard, type g h k e.

Those keys enter ㅎ, ㅗ, ㅏ, and ㄷ; the Korean input method (IME) combines ㅗㅏ into ㅘ, then forms 홛.

A font can change where Hangul components sit, their size, and their shape without changing which syllable is encoded.

Neutral inside Korean text; by itself, it gives little context about the sender's meaning.

Questions people ask

3

Why does 홛 look different in different fonts?

The syllable is unchanged; a typeface can alter where its Hangul components sit, their size, and their drawn shapes.

Why is 홛 in 홧팅?

It is a sound guide, not a spelling correction. A 2023 pronunciation entry gives 홛 팅 for 홧팅, a casual Korean cheer like “you can do it”; 홧팅 remains the usual written form.

Why does 홛 split into jamo?

These are different encoded sequences. ㅎㅘㄷ uses separate compatibility jamo, not the single precomposed character 홛; the conjoining sequence 홛 can be combined by text software to display 홛.
