Hangul Syllable Hyalg

10650/11172

햙 is a Hangul syllable block, not a complete Korean word on its own. Its written parts are initial ㅎ, vowel ㅑ, and final cluster ㄺ. The same block can also be encoded as separate jamo that render identically.

What 햙 means

By itself, 햙 is a syllable block, not a complete Korean word. Its written parts are ㅎ, ㅑ, and final ㄺ, a two-consonant cluster in learner-facing jamo notation. Hangul combines consonant and vowel letters into syllable blocks; a word or sentence supplies the larger meaning.

How do I enter 햙 with a Korean keyboard?

A Korean input method can compose it from its jamo sequence. Enter ㅎ, then ㅑ, then ㄹ and ㄱ for the final cluster ㄺ. Korean keyboard software combines those inputs into 햙.

Unicode also permits the same syllable to be represented as one precomposed character or as separate conjoining jamo, the Hangul consonant and vowel letters. They can display as the same block while text tools see different code-point sequences.

Is 햙 related to Phags-pa?

A direct derivation from Phags-pa is disputed, not established. Before Hangul, Korean was also written with Chinese characters in systems such as Idu, Hyangchal and Gugyeol, which adapted those characters to represent Korean. Hangul was intended to make Korean writing accessible without requiring Chinese-character literacy. The first notice introducing Hunminjeongeum, the text for the new script, dates to 1443; its explanatory book was published in 1446.

Some scholars have proposed that Hangul's design drew on Phags-pa, another writing system. A few letter shapes resemble one another, but later analysis of Hangul's design principles weakened the case for a simple derivation. That debated connection concerns Hangul's writing system, not a borrowing of this block as a standalone sign.

As of 2026, 햙 has no established standalone social meaning; it reads as spelling material.

Sent alone, it will not reliably read as a Korean word or message.

Questions people ask

1

Can 햙 be stored as separate jamo?

Yes. Unicode treats the precomposed syllable and its equivalent sequence of conjoining jamo (separate Hangul consonant and vowel letters) as canonically equivalent. They may look like one block while containing different code-point sequences.
