Hangul syllable hyeol

혈 (hyeol) is the Korean reading of 血, a Chinese character used in Korean writing; it supplies the “blood” element in words like 혈액 (“blood”) and 혈통 (“lineage”). For everyday “blood” on its own, Korean uses 피; 혈 alone usually reads like a word-part or a formal term. A Korean keyboard builds it from ㅎ, ㅕ, and ㄹ.

What 혈 means

혈 is the Korean reading of 血, a Hanja character meaning “blood.” Hanja are Chinese characters used in Korean writing. This reading appears as a word element in terms such as 혈액 (“blood”) and 혈통 (“lineage”).

Korean uses 피 for the everyday standalone noun “blood.” By itself, 혈 usually feels like a formal word element or an unfinished fragment; the rest of the word supplies the specific meaning.

How did Hangul become Korean writing?

Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to read and write. Under King Sejong, its letters were created for people without access to Chinese-character education. A historical record reports 28 letters by December 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, a text presenting the script, was completed in 1446.

Chinese characters initially remained dominant in official writing, while Hangul spread through private letters, women's writing, Buddhist scripture, and popular novels. The Kabo reforms brought Hangul into official documents in 1894, helping move it from vernacular writing outside elite institutions into public administration.

How do I type 혈?

Use a Korean keyboard and type ㅎ, ㅕ, then ㄹ. The Korean input method, or IME, arranges those Hangul letters into the single block 혈 as you type.

Unicode can represent 혈 as one precomposed block or as a sequence of Hangul letters designed to join. Some software handles the sequence less consistently; if the letters appear apart, that is a font or software display issue, not a different spelling. In 혈액, the final ㄹ joins the following vowel in pronunciation, so it sounds like 혀랙 while the spelling remains 혈액.

혈 is a word-building element with a formal, often technical feel; 피 is the everyday standalone noun for “blood.”

For everyday blood on its own, use 피; bare 혈 can look unfinished.
