hangul syllable ja

Hangul Syllable Ja

7057/11172

자 is the Korean syllable written “ja” in Latin letters; its meaning depends on context. Alone in conversation, it can mean “okay, here we go,” “come on,” or “here.” As an informal verb ending, -자 means “let’s …,” as in 가자, “let’s go”—but a lone 자 is not automatically an invitation.

What 자 means

On its own, 자 can get attention or urge action. Korean ja can also give the speaker a moment to decide what to say. In 자, 커피 한 잔 하세요, it introduces an offer of coffee; in 자, 거스름돈 여기 있어요, it accompanies handing over change.

Attached to a verb’s core form, or stem, sentence-final -자 proposes doing something together. Other -자 constructions link parts of a sentence, so simply spotting 자 at the end of a word is not enough to translate it.

자 belongs to a deliberately designed writing system

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was recorded as created in 1443. Hunminjeongeum, the text introducing it, was published in 1446. The system was designed to make writing Korean more accessible than relying on Chinese characters.

자 groups the consonant ㅈ and vowel ㅏ into one syllable block. Its different readings come from Korean words and grammar, not from a picture acquiring successive symbolic meanings.

A bare 자 can sound abrupt because it nudges the listener; judge that nudge against your relationship and the surrounding words.

Verb-final -자 is informal: avoid it as your default invitation when you need polite Korean.
