What 잠 means
It names sleep, and figuratively can mean being unaware.
With 자다 (“to sleep”), 잠 is the action; with 들다 (“to enter”), it means falling asleep. Figuratively, as in 능력의 잠 (“dormant ability”), it can describe something not yet brought into awareness or use.
Middle Korean ᄌᆞᆷ appears in 능엄경언해, a Korean translation of a Buddhist scripture, in 1461. Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was devised in 1443 and explained in a book published in 1446 to make Korean easier to write than Chinese characters. 잠 joins opening consonant ㅈ, vowel ㅏ, and final consonant ㅁ.
The syllable itself is neutral; the Korean words around it set the tone.
잠 alone names sleep; the surrounding words must make it a good-night wish.
