What 잣 means
It means the edible seed of the Korean pine, 잣나무. Silla kingdom records describe pine nuts sent to China as gifts under the name 해송자; Joseon dynasty records list them as a local specialty and tribute.
A study links 잣 in 15th-century Korean place names to an older word for a fortress or castle. Later names shortened it to 자 or 재.

1Why can text tools treat 잣 differently?
Yes. Unicode may store it as one precomposed syllable or as a sequence of Korean letters called jamo. They can look identical, yet exact matching may differ if software does not normalize the two forms.
