Hangul syllable jeot

젙 is a Korean Hangul syllable, not a word with a fixed standalone meaning. In a documented Gangwon dialect example, it stands for 곁, “side” or “vicinity”; an isolated message needs context. Korean input can compose it from ㅈ, ㅓ and ㅌ.

What 젙 means

By itself, 젙 has no fixed general meaning.

An oral-literature example recorded in Gangwon in 1983 uses 젙에 to mean “beside it”; there, 젙 is a dialectal form of 곁, “side” or “vicinity.” Outside that regional sentence, an isolated 젙 needs context.

How do I type 젙?

Use Korean input and enter ㅈ, ㅓ, then ㅌ.

On the standard Dubeolsik layout, those inputs are W, J, and X; a Korean input method editor (IME) combines them into 젙.

For Unicode text processing, the decomposed form is three jamo (individual Hangul letters): ᄌ ᅥ ᇀ. Normalization can combine them into 젙. Fonts arrange the parts inside a syllable cell, so spacing can vary; an app showing the jamo apart is displaying decomposed text, not a different character.

Why are Hangul letters grouped into syllable blocks?

Hangul places the letters of a syllable together in one cell.

A record of Hangul’s creation is dated 1443; the explanatory book 훈민정음 해례 appeared in 1446. Its stated aim was an easier way to write Korean speech, whose sounds Chinese characters did not represent well.

Hangul later became the alphabet used for Korean writing. Its sound-based letters could also record Chinese readings; Hanja are Chinese characters also used in Korean writing, a separate script.

Neutral as a Hangul character; its documented word use is regional.

Do not swap 젙 for 젓 or 젖: their final consonants make different syllables and words.

Why does 젙 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
