What 짚 means
It names dry grain stalks left after harvest.
볏짚 is rice straw; 밀짚 is wheat straw; 지푸라기 is a loose piece of straw; 짚신 are straw sandals.
The earliest record is from 1466: Korean medical handbook 구급방언해 spells the word 딮. Middle Korean is an earlier form of Korean. Hangul joins letters into syllable blocks.
A 2019 study of South Korea’s Seongju region records straw used for storage, rope, mats, and shoes, plus ropes used to mark ritual boundaries. It traces how industrialization moved these goods from daily use toward craftwork.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
