Hangul syllable 쩥

7782/11172

With a Korean 2-set keyboard active, press Shiftㅈ, then ㅓ and ㅌ; the input method builds 쩥. This Hangul syllable contributes a sound inside Korean words; the surrounding syllables establish the word's meaning. Fonts can arrange the block's parts differently, and Unicode can store the same syllable as one block or as component jamo.

What 쩥 means

With a Korean 2-set keyboard active, press Shiftㅈ, then ㅓ and ㅌ. The input method combines those jamo (Hangul component letters) into the single syllable block 쩥.

What does 쩥 mean?

쩥 is one Hangul syllable block. In a Korean word, its sound works with neighboring syllables, which establish the word's meaning. On its own, the character gives you a syllable, not the surrounding word context.

The Korean alphabet was devised under King Sejong in 1443; the book Hunminjeongeum, which introduced the script, appeared in 1446. It explained how initial consonants, vowels, and final consonants combine into syllable blocks. Earlier Korean writing systems such as Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol adapted Chinese characters to represent Korean speech or annotate it. Hangul uses Korean letters instead: jamo combine into blocks, so the connection to Chinese-character writing is historical, not visual.

How is 쩥 decomposed?

Unicode can store 쩥 as one block or as three component jamo. The decomposed sequence is ᄍ ᅥ ᇀ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant. Normalization-aware software can switch between the precomposed syllable and its jamo sequence without changing the reading.

Older Korean texts can show jamo sequences and tone marks. These are writing conventions, not alternate meanings for this block.

A Hangul font determines how the components sit inside the block. Different typefaces can arrange them differently while showing the same syllable; the variation is typography, not a change of character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 쩥 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
