What 쫄 means
Read the whole Korean word. In 쫄다, 쫄 carries the colloquial sense of being intimidated; 쫄지 마 means “don’t be scared” or “don’t back down.” In 쫄면, the same syllable is part of the name of a chewy noodle dish, so 쫄 alone has no single translation.
Hangul was devised to make writing Korean more accessible to people who could not easily learn Chinese characters. Its design was completed in 1443 and announced in 1446 in Hunmin Chongum, a guide explaining the new letters. Hangul syllable blocks combine consonant and vowel letters; 쫄 is built from ㅉ, ㅗ, and ㄹ.
Why does 쫄 feel informal?
It carries slang force, not neutral formal tone. Colloquial writers use 쫄다 and 쫄지 마 for a sharper, spoken feel. A formal reader may treat 쫄다 as a misspelling, while a casual writer may choose it to give the phrase more punch.
In 2011, 쫄지 마 was also used as public encouragement associated with the Korean political podcast 나는 꼼수다 and rally coverage. In that setting, it could express solidarity or defiance, not just a literal instruction not to be afraid.
Colloquial and emphatic in the intimidation sense; it signals slang rather than neutral formal Korean.
