What 좊 means
Its meaning comes from the Korean word around it.
The block combines ㅈ, ㅗ, and ㅍ: a consonant at the start, a vowel, and a consonant at the end. “Jop” is part of the Unicode name for this syllable, not a Korean word or translation.
Why does this Hangul block exist?
It follows Hangul’s rule of grouping letters into syllable blocks.
Hangul was devised in 1443 and officially introduced in 1446 with a guide explaining how it works. Formal literacy in Korea had relied heavily on Chinese characters, so Hangul offered a more accessible way to read and write Korean.
Early Hangul used extra letters and tone marks—small marks showing a syllable’s pitch—that later fell out of standard use. The syllable-block method continued, and 좊 is one combination under that method.
How do I type 좊?
Enter ㅈ, then ㅗ, then ㅍ in a Korean IME.
A Korean input method composes those Hangul letters into one block in that order. Typing the Latin label jop is not the same as entering those letters.
The final consonant is ㅍ; 좁 ends with ㅂ, so the blocks are different. In code, use the character’s listed Unicode value with your programming language’s escape syntax.
