What 주 means
Read the whole Korean word; 주 has no fixed translation by itself. 주다 means “to give,” 주말 means “weekend,” and 주의 can mean “caution” or “attention.” Sharing 주 does not give these words a shared meaning.
In a Korean personal name written in Hangul (the Korean alphabet), 주 alone cannot reveal the intended meaning. It can correspond to different Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), or the name may use no Hanja at all.
The syllable block joins ㅈ, a Korean consonant letter, and ㅜ, a Korean vowel letter; its square layout marks one syllable, not a Chinese-character meaning. Hangul was created in 1443 to fit Korean speech and broaden access to writing. Its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, followed in 1446. Those dates concern the writing system, not the first documented use of 주.
Neutral in tone; the Korean word or name supplies the meaning.
Read the word, or ask which Hanja—if any—the name uses.

Questions people ask
1Why does 주 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
