hangul syllable jung

Hangul Syllable Jung

7442/11172

중 can mean “middle,” “medium,” or “intermediate”; in school shorthand it can stand for “middle school.” Its sense in a Korean word comes from the whole word.

Text symbol

What 중 means

Its Korean meaning depends on the word around it. In school shorthand, 중 can stand for “middle school”; 중심 means “center.”

Hangul was devised in 1443 so people could write Korean without Chinese characters; its design was explained in 1446. These dates concern Hangul, not the first appearance of this exact syllable.

Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal were earlier ways to write Korean with Chinese characters, not earlier forms of 중. Hangul spread through Buddhist and Confucian texts, practical books, and laws; it became official in 1894.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 중 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
