hangul syllable jweo

Hangul Syllable Jweo

7449/11172

줘 means “give me” or “do it for me,” depending on what comes before it. A standalone 줘 is a direct, plain request; after another verb, it asks for that action on the speaker’s behalf. Use 주세요 or a question-form request with someone higher-status or unfamiliar.

Text symbol

What 줘 means

It means “give me” or “do it for me.”

As the shortened form of 주어 from 주다, to give, 줘 can request an object, time, space, or other help. After another verb, -어 줘 asks the other person to do that action for the speaker’s benefit: 도와줘 means “help me,” while 돌봐 줘 means “look after me.”

A bare 줘 is direct and plain. With a higher-status or unfamiliar person, choose 주세요 or a question-form request; with someone who accepts plain speech, 줘 can be ordinary rather than insulting. A workplace role-play study reported in 2007 found that request strategy changed with power and distance.

Why does 주어 become 줘?

It is a grammatical contraction, not a new texting symbol.

Korean orthography accepts 주어 줘, where ㅜ and 어 combine into the vowel ㅝ. That ㅝ is the w-plus-어 sound also heard in 워.

There is no single inventor or first attestation for modern 줘. For the writing system that carries it, the first documentary reference is in 1443; its explanatory publication followed in 1446. Hangul was made because writing with Chinese characters did not fit Korean speech and was hard for many people to use, with daily communication as the goal. The research here, as of 2026, found no separate cross-cultural slang meaning for this exact syllable; its documented development is grammatical: “give” extends to “do it for me.”

Plain, direct Korean: friendly in the right relationship, demanding in the wrong one.

With a boss or stranger, bare 줘 can sound like an order.

Why is 줘 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
