Hangul syllable 줭

7470/11172

줭 is a Korean syllable; its meaning comes from the word or name around it. Hangul groups its letters into blocks. Hangul was developed in 1443–1446 to make Korean easier to write than with Chinese characters, and became the official script in 1894.

What 줭 means

Read it as one Korean syllable inside a word or name.

King Sejong’s court devised Hangul. Hunminjeongeum, a guide to its letters, explained the script. Buddhist and Confucian translations helped spread it; practical texts followed. Its blocks can resemble Chinese characters, but its letters were designed for Korean.

Its sequence is ᄌ ᅯ ᆼ; these Hangul letters are called jamo. Software may handle them separately instead of as one block; it still represents the same syllable.

1

Why does 줭 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
