hangul syllable jyeo

Hangul syllable jyeo

7225/11172

Jyeo (져) gets its meaning from the rest of the Korean word: it can mean losing, the sun setting, or becoming. Korean writing joins its consonant and vowel in one block.

Text symbol

What 져 means

Read the whole word; 져 has no single translation alone. 내가 져 means “I lose,” 해가 져 means “the sun sets,” and 예뻐져 means “becomes pretty.” Its consonant and vowel pieces are called jamo.

Hangul was created in 1443; its design was explained in the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum. It made Korean easier to write than Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, systems that adapted Chinese characters for Korean. By the late 16th century, Hangul appeared in practical guides and religious texts. Letters and everyday labels show its use across social ranks; 져 is one syllable block in that system.

1

Why does 져 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
