Hangul syllable 죬

7405/11172

죬 is one Korean syllable with no fixed meaning by itself; the word around it supplies the meaning. Its final pair ㄽ can sound like just ㄹ at the end of a word or before another consonant.

What 죬 means

It spells a syllable; the full Korean word supplies its meaning.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, groups sound letters (jamo) into blocks. 죬 joins the leading consonant ᄌ, vowel ᅭ and final consonant ᆳ; this final jamo corresponds to the two-part ending ㄽ (ㄹ ㅅ).

How do I type 죬?

On the standard Korean 2-set keyboard, enter wyft.

Switch your input method to Korean, then type wyft: w enters ㅈ, y enters ㅛ, f enters ㄹ, and t enters ㅅ. The input method combines the final two into ㄽ. Other Korean layouts use different keys.

While you type, the input method may redraw the unfinished block as it decides whether a consonant ends one syllable or starts the next.

Why can its spelling and sound differ?

The final cluster is two written consonants that can sound as one.

At a word's end or before another consonant, ㄽ is pronounced with only the ㄹ part, a light l sound like the end of “bell.” Before a vowel, the whole word determines how it sounds.

Fonts can draw this text character in different styles without changing its identity. Hangul's syllable blocks are part of the writing system itself. In 1443, King Sejong developed Hangul to give people an accessible way to write Korean, which had often relied on Chinese characters or systems adapted from them. In 1446, an explanatory book called Hunminjeongeum described the letters and how syllable blocks work. The script was also called Jeongeum, Eonmun and Gukmun; “Hangeul” became widely used by 1928.

As part of Korean spelling it is neutral; alone, it lacks the context needed to interpret it.

Is jyols how a Korean speaker pronounces 죬?

No. jyols is Unicode's algorithmic label for the syllable's component sequence, not a guide to pronouncing a Korean word.
