What 캠 means
Usually, it means camera in a compound. Online Korean uses 캠 as a short form for camera or webcam: 웹캠 means webcam, and 캠 스터디 names a study group that meets over video. In technical writing, the same syllable can name a mechanical cam or stand for CAM, short for computer-aided manufacturing. The surrounding words settle which one is meant.
The camera shorthand has a documented trail: the National Institute of Korean Language’s 2010 new-words report includes 얼캠, a camera-related term. In 2020, Korean news described university students using 캠 스터디 for group study over video platforms.
Why is 캠 a square block?
Hangul combines letters to write Korean syllables. Hangul was devised in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 as an alphabet for Korean. Earlier Korean writing systems such as 이두, 향찰 and 구결 adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Modern Hangul forms square syllable blocks from consonant and vowel letters; this one combines ㅋ, ㅐ and ㅁ.
Fonts can change the spacing and proportions of letters inside the square without changing which syllable the block represents.
On its own, 캠 is a neutral Korean syllable; as camera shorthand, it sounds casual in online and study-chat contexts.
In technical text, 캠 may mean a machine part or computer-aided manufacturing, not a camera.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
