What 칵 means
On its own, 칵 is usually just a syllable; context gives it a role.
In 칵테일, it is the first syllable of Korean for “cocktail.” In 칵 하고, it imitates a forceful throat-clear or phlegm-spitting; a Korean dictionary records this sound use in 2023.
칵 is one block made from ㅋ (opening consonant), ㅏ (vowel), and ㄱ (ending consonant). Hangul was created in 1443 because Chinese characters fit Korean poorly. A court record calls it 언문 (“vernacular script”) and says its letters followed Chinese seal script as a shape model, not that 칵 is a picture. An explanatory book, 훈민정음 해례, appeared in 1446.

Questions people ask
1Why does 칵 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
