What 칹 means
On its own, 칹 has no fixed word meaning.
It is one syllable-sized piece of Korean writing. The surrounding word supplies its lexical meaning and grammar. By itself, treat it as a character sample or an identification prompt; the block alone does not reveal a sender’s intention.
Hangul’s earliest official record is a 1443 notice of 28 letters. A 1446 record concerns the Hunminjeongeum manuscript, an explanation of the writing system. Its stated aims included making Korean writing easier and representing Chinese pronunciations. North and South Korea share the Hangul script, though their spelling conventions differ. A 2009 Journal of Korean Linguistics study compared Hangul with the Phags-pa writing system; proposed influence remains debated, so resemblance alone does not establish descent.
Why does 칹 look different?
It can be stored as one block or three joining Korean letters.
The Jamo decomposition of 칹 is ᄏ ᅡ ᆬ. These conjoining Jamo are Korean letters that join into a syllable block. A Korean IME can also compose 칹 from the keyboard forms ㅋ, ㅏ, ㄴ, and ㅈ, combining the last pair as ㄵ.
As of 2026, Unicode’s Korean FAQ says modern browsers generally support these joining features, while support is less broad across apps. If the three letters stay separate, that is a display issue, not a different syllable.
Neutral inside Korean text; its tone comes from the surrounding message.
If it arrives alone, do not infer a reaction; ask what word or context was intended.
