What 큰 means
큰 is the form of 크다 used before a noun.
In 큰 집 (“big house”), 큰 modifies 집 (“house”). It can also describe scale, importance, power, or ability.
By 1447, the Korean text 석보상절 used 큰 for “great” or “large.” Hangul, Korea’s writing system, was developed in 1443–1446 and groups letters into syllable blocks. A 2008 study traces the two senses to Middle Korean, an older stage of the language: 하다 could mean “many” or “great.” Modern Korean uses separate adjectives 많다 (“many”) and 크다 (“big”).

1Can 큰 appear as separate letters?
Yes. Unicode normalization can decompose its syllable block into separate Hangul letters; together, they still represent the same syllable.
