Hangul Syllable Keunj

9330/11172

큱 is a Hangul syllable block, a written unit built from initial consonant ㅋ, vowel ㅡ, and final cluster ㄵ. The parts show how the syllable is spelled; Korean word context supplies its meaning. On Korean 2-set input (Dubeolsik), Z M S W produce it.

What 큱 means

큱 spells one Hangul syllable from a consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant cluster.

Its letter parts are called jamo: ㅋ starts the block, ㅡ supplies the vowel, and ㄵ is the two-consonant ending. They show how the syllable is spelled; a Korean word supplies its meaning in context.

Why does 큱 have this shape?

Hangul groups alphabet letters into a block for each syllable. Hangul was created in 1443. An explanation of the alphabet was published in a book called Hunminjeongeum in 1446. Hangul offered a more direct way to write Korean when Chinese characters were difficult for ordinary people to use for Korean.

Hangul’s square blocks can resemble Chinese characters, but its letter shapes are not derived from them; the block is a layout for alphabet letters.

The writing system has also been called jeongeum, eonmun, banjeol, gukmun, and gukseo. The name Hangeul began appearing in public use in the early 1910s and was widely used by 1928. These are names for the system, not alternate readings of 큱.

How do I type 큱?

Use Korean 2-set input; the keyboard software assembles the letters. This layout is called Dubeolsik. Type Z M S W.

Those keys enter ㅋ ㅡ ㄴ ㅈ, and the input method combines final ㄴㅈ as ㄵ. Since consonant keys can serve at the start or end of a syllable, the block may reflow as you type the next key.

Fonts can draw or space the parts differently; Unicode’s reference glyph is only an example. Software may store the same syllable as separate jamo and still display it as one block.

A lone 큱 gives you a syllable spelling, not the word-level meaning; check its Korean context.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 큱 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
