Hangul Syllable Kogs

9048/11172

콗 is a single Hangul syllable block, made from an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant cluster. It contributes one syllable in Korean text; the surrounding word or sentence supplies the meaning. Its Unicode label, KOGS, describes the spelling structure, not how to pronounce it.

What 콗 means

콗 is a Korean syllable block, not a message by itself.

Hangul letters, called jamo, join as ㅋ ㅗ ㄳ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant cluster. A Korean 2-set input method builds the same block from ㅋ, ㅗ, ㄱ, and ㅅ in that order.

KOGS, the Unicode label, describes that sequence of components. It is not a translation or a pronunciation guide.

Why is 콗 written as a square?

Hangul keeps a syllable’s letters together in a compact block.

In Unicode’s decomposed form, 콗 uses the position-specific Hangul letters ᄏ ᅩ ᆪ. They are the initial, vowel, and final forms corresponding to ㅋ, ㅗ, and ㄳ. Fonts may vary their shapes, spacing, and proportions while leaving the character the same.

Hangul was devised in the Korean kingdom of Joseon in 1443 to write Korean. The 1446 explanatory book Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon describes the script’s purpose and how its letters combine into syllable blocks. Those dates mark the system and its guide, not the first appearance of this exact block.

Neutral as a Hangul character; on its own, it is hard to read without surrounding Korean text.

Is 콗 an emoji?

No. It is a Hangul text character. Its block arranges Korean letters as a syllable; it is not picture artwork.
