hangul syllable kolm

Hangul syllable kolm

9055/11172

콞 is a Korean syllable, not a word with a fixed meaning. Its parts are ㅋ, ㅗ, and ㄻ, a double final consonant cluster. In a full word, ㄻ usually sounds like ㅁ (m) at the end, but splits before a vowel.

What 콞 means

Its meaning comes from the Korean word around it. 콞 spells one Korean syllable: ㅋ is its first consonant, ㅗ its vowel, and ㄻ its double final consonant cluster, called 겹받침. Alone, it is a syllable fragment, so the surrounding word supplies the meaning.

Hangul began as a system of 28 letters created in late 1443; its explanatory manuscript, Hunminjeongeum, was completed in 1446. It set out how initial, middle, and final sounds combine. The system was made for Korean, whose speech differed from Chinese, and to give ordinary people a writing system they could learn.

Why does ㄻ sound different in 콞?

The final cluster changes with the next sound. At the end of a word or before another consonant, ㄻ is generally pronounced as ㅁ, the Korean m consonant. Before a vowel, ㄹ moves to the next syllable's start while ㅁ stays behind. The spelling keeps both parts even when only one is heard.

Fifteenth-century Hangul spelling followed pronunciation more closely. The 1933 orthographic unification and South Korea's 1988 rules favored keeping related word forms spelled consistently, even when their sounds shift. That is why ㄹㅁ can remain visible in the spelling while pronunciation changes.

How do I type 콞?

Use Korean 2-set input and enter z, h, f, a. Those keys produce ㅋ, ㅗ, ㄹ, ㅁ in order; the input method joins them into 콞.

A computer can store this as one precomposed syllable or as the jamo sequence ㅋㅗㄹㅁ; both represent the same Korean syllable. Fonts and text normalization can affect whether the parts appear as one block or separate jamo, not its reading.

Neutral Hangul spelling. Alone, 콞 reads as a syllable fragment or a typing example.

By itself, 콞 gives you a syllable, not the meaning of a whole word.

Why is 콞 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
