hangul syllable kwec

Hangul syllable Kwec

9264/11172

퀯 is a Hangul syllable block: by itself it gives a syllable, not a reliable word translation; the surrounding Korean spelling supplies the meaning. Its parts show how Hangul input builds a block in a writing system devised in the 15th century.

What 퀯 means

A bare 퀯 gives a syllable, not a reliable translation.

Within a Korean word, it spells one syllable; the word supplies the translation. By itself, the block does not tell you which word was intended.

Hangul was devised in the 15th century so Korean speech could be written with learnable letters grouped into syllable blocks. Its design was completed in 1443; the explanatory Hunminjeongeum manuscript was published in 1446. Modern spelling was based on a 1933 proposal and partly revised in 1988.

Why does 퀯 look different in different fonts?

Fonts can shift Hangul's parts without changing the syllable.

Hangul arranges an initial consonant, a vowel, and, when present, a final consonant into a compact block. In 퀯 these are ㅋ, ㅞ, and ㅊ.

A Korean input method can form 퀯 from the keys for ㅋ, ㅜ, ㅔ, and ㅊ. Unicode's equivalent decomposed spelling is 퀯, a sequence of linked Hangul letters; fonts can vary their shape, size, and placement.

A neutral Hangul syllable; the word and sentence carry the tone.

Don't treat a lone 퀯 as a complete translation; read the Korean word around it.

Questions people ask

1

Why is ㅋㅜㅔㅊ still separate in my text?

Because ㅋㅜㅔㅊ uses standalone-form Hangul letters. NFC, Unicode's text-normalization form, composes the linked sequence 퀯 into 퀯 but does not convert that standalone-form sequence.
