hangul syllable kyanj

Hangul syllable Kyanj

캱 is a Hangul syllable block, not a word with a fixed meaning on its own. In Korean text, it can spell one syllable inside a larger word or name; that surrounding text determines the meaning.

What 캱 means

It is one Hangul syllable block, not a word on its own.

Hangul letters, called jamo, combine into syllable blocks. Here the initial consonant is ㅋ, the vowel is ㅑ, and the final cluster ㄵ is a pair of letters in the block’s bottom position, called batchim. The block spells part of a Korean word or name; it does not translate by itself.

Before Hangul, Korean could be written with Chinese characters, but they did not map neatly onto Korean speech. Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean easier to write; an explanatory guide to the script appeared in 1446.

How do I type 캱?

A Korean input method can assemble its letters into one block.

On a Korean keyboard layout, enter the letters in order: ㅋ, ㅑ, then the final consonants ㄴ and ㅈ. The input method editor (IME) combines them into 캱. Unicode normalization can also represent the syllable as a precomposed block or as the joining jamo 캱, so equivalent text can use different underlying sequences.

why does 캱 look different in different fonts?

Fonts can arrange the letters differently.

Unicode defines the letters and their composition, not one universal outline. A font can change their placement, shape, and size; the block still identifies 캱.

Its meaning depends on the larger Korean word; alone, it reads like a spelling fragment.

Don’t translate 캱 by itself; read the Korean word that contains it.

Questions people ask

1

how is the final ㄵ in 캱 pronounced?

It depends on the word around it. At the end of a Korean syllable, ㄵ is pronounced like ㄴ, an n sound; before a vowel, its ㅈ part moves to the next syllable with a j-like sound.
